Long story short, I had agreed through eMail to shoot a short documantary-style video for the Phenomenauts. But unfortunately, I arrived too late to catch their set and wasn’t able to get any footage. So with a beer in my hand and the rest of my evening free of responsibility I decided to stick around to see the headliner, The Aquabats.

In front of a packed house, the Aquabats put on what was more like an episode of the Superfriends rather than a rock show, fighting one-eyed monsters, big foam lobster-men and the like, before during and after each song. Their extremely high energy and stellar musicianship combined with their punk and ska-rooted tunes, left me with an uncontrollable case of perma-grin. And as I looked around, it was obvious that it was contagious.

Directly after the show, I went home and got online to sample some of my peers collection of Aquabats tunes, but was let down by the quality of their studio work. Like plenty of other bands, their studio stuff failed to capture their energy and dynamics they are capable of in a live situation. I tried and tried, but could NOT get into them after that.

But don’t get me wrong, whenever I get the opportunity see The Aquabats again, I’ll be all over it!! A Hilariously good time!
